Some trees look stunning with an interior lighting effect. This often works as a solution for smaller to medium-sized trees which are open and without dense foliage, which was the case for this property in Bluffton. The fixture is placed near the trunk with vertical aiming.
As you can see in the video, the light travels up and throughout the tree and illuminates interior branches for a beautiful effect. Typically around the Lowcountry I find many hollies and some magnolias with enough open branches for this to be effective. Otherwise, trees with dense foliage may block illumination traveling upwards on the truck and branches, and may also become too bright on bottom portion (we call these hot spots). Of course, other species also look great with vertical illumination close to the trunk, and are easier to illuminate without lower level dense foliage, such as tall palms or the striking multi-trunked crepe myrtles.
